New American Century

If you've recently studied international relations, international politics, or anything remotely concerning the state of US power today, then there's a good chance that you've heard of PNAC: Project for a New American Century. This organisation has as its goal 'to promote American global leadership', and in many ways control the Bush Administration (names on their 'Statement of Principles include Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz).

These people are scary, and their ideas for a 'New American Century' are even scarier. Here is their 'Statement of Principles':
- we need to increase defense spending significantly if we are to carry out our global responsibilities today and modernize our armed forces for the future;

- we need to strengthen our ties to democratic allies and to challenge regimes hostile to our interests and values;

- we need to promote the cause of political and economic freedom abroad;

- we need to accept responsibility for America's unique role in preserving and extending an international order friendly to our security, our prosperity, and our principles.
Essentially they're all for America ruling the world. Which, you know, isn't always a good thing. All of the above 'principles' can be found neatly embodied in the National Security Strategy of the United States of America, one of the scariest, and strangest, documents you will ever read. These people don't seem to believe in, well, logic much. Which is always comforting.

Which in a roundabout way is me saying: I hope to god Kerry wins on Tuesday. Who knows what else the Bush administration can bugger up in the next 4 years.

(as you can tell by the content of this post, I'm doing my international relations exam revision!)
